Tulip Agriculture’s Howard Revell was presented with the title of Pig Farmer of the Year at this week’s 2017 Farmers Weekly Awards.Tulip Agriculture’s Howard Revell was presented with the title of Pig Farmer of the Year at this week’s 2017 Farmers Weekly Awards.

Howard received the award on behalf of the BQP farming operation at the prestigious ceremony held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Thursday, 5th October.

Howard and BQP – the dedicated farming operation of Tulip’s Dalehead Foods division – were one of three finalists shortlisted for the category, with top technical performance being the common theme across all finalists this year. Another of the three finalists was Guy King of Park House, Norfolk, which also forms part of the BQP breeding herd. In addition, BQP Growing Farms Manager Richard Gooding, was shortlisted for the Farm Advisor of the Year award.

Judges visited each of the finalists for a three-hour interview and tour and, in their deliberations, highlighted the following strengths:

  • Good relationship with its customer means it is producing exactly what the customer wants
  • Producing an added-value product with all pigs born outdoors and finished to high welfare standards
  • Strong environment credentials with all outdoor bred farms independently assessed by environmental expert
  • The desire to continuously improve the business
  • Good public engagement
The judging panel remarked: “BQP is an integrated business where every decision is customer focused. Welfare, ethics, staff, production and the environment is at the heart of everything it does.”

Head of Tulip Agriculture, Andrew Saunders, commented: “I am absolutely delighted for Howard and the BQP team. This award is a reflection of the high level of dedication, commitment and enthusiasm they demonstrate on a daily basis. Not only do the team continue to delight our customer but should take great pride in the fact that our farming operation is held up as a true example of world class agriculture in action.”

Howard was recently promoted to the position of Pig Production Director for Tulip Agriculture having held the position of Production Manager for our BQP operations within the Dalehead division for several years.
